To make modifications or to port it over to a system that might not have a precompiled binary of it already... TempleOS

But in all seriousness though, the source code can be very useful when it comes to debugging engine problems or finding entry points that can be either patched out or exploited (depends on the person finding it). I just find it disappointing that Epic Games would force their source code behind a private Github repository.
