I guess he has the highest number of subscribers of anyone on YouTube because 85+ million hipsters decided to subscribe ironically out of hatred?
To answer the question though, the more popular/successful/infamous/etc. something is (it doesn't matter what it is; can be a person, company, product, movement, idea, diet, etc.), the more exposure/visibility it gets and the more people talk about it, both good or bad.
The real question is why does everyone love him... I personally find him annoying as fuck.. his voice is annoying, I don't find the topics interesting, the editing is garbage (essentially just a slew of 2-3 second clips pasted together), audio quality is shit and the ears make him look genuinely retarded. I've probably watched a grand total of 20 minutes of him. If other people like that kinda stuff, great, just not my cup of tea...variety is what makes YouTube good.
