Imho, that actually depends on the reason why you're playing, and if it's modded or vanilla?
Afaik, the recent updates are quite nice (Update Aquatic is <3), new features and etc. but since I usually play with a heavily modded Minecraft, I rather play older versions of it (1.7.10 to be exact), later versions of Minecraft lacks mod support / compatibility especially with Forge which is probably the single most important core mod in Minecraft's existence.
Possibly inaccurate, but here's an official MCF Modlist to give you an idea should you try modding the game if you decide to update. I'm not sure if the later version even have mods, didn't bother to check XD
23 mods listed on 1.9 47 mods listed on 1.8.9 --- Mojang and Minecraft are acquired by Microsoft for $2.5 billion 431 mods listed on 1.8 1239 mods listed on 1.7.10 --- Best update imho before the game officially died lol 768 mods listed on 1.7.2 926 mods listed on 1.6.4 710 mods listed on 1.6.2 177 mods listed on 1.6.1 788 mods listed on 1.5.2 584 mods listed on 1.5.1 257 mods listed on 1.5 732 mods listed on 1.4.7 299 mods listed on 1.4.5 118 mods listed on 1.4.2 83 mods listed on 1.3.2
Anyways, since you're asking whether the update is good or bad, then personally I would say it's pretty much 'meh' at this point.. since you could probably get away with just having mods installed and still make your experience actually fun.
