Know what you're trying to accomplish in broad strokes. The language is moot, having a familiarity with what libraries are available is handy though (for example, machine learning in python, or serving web content via node.js). Even full time developers like me just stackoverflow for specific syntax and tactics all day long, the main thing is getting familar with strategies, patterns, and overall design.
