Honestly, I can't experience Elite: Frontier II (at least not immersively)but I can totally relate how you must have felt with that. Few of the remaining games keep their sequels amazing these days and of course rare are those which maintain that quality to be a cult in itself.
Did you play Bioshock 2? It didn't do it for me at all! Original was way more engaging!
