Minecraft with RPG systems is any good?

Server or modded, which is better for rpg based games?

I'm actually trying to do a server for a few friends, which would be hardcore, with custom mobs that also level up, increased difficulty as you get far from spawn, etc.

However, it is SO hard to do, I sometimes think of giving up, lol.

What do you guys think about it?
