After working with XenForo for a few years, I've switched to MyBB this year. Mainly because it's possible to get cleaner urls with the Google Seo plugin with minimal effort. I really don't like the XF url format.
MyBB is a great free alternative to IPB, XenForo and Vanilla. There are lot's of plugins and it's easy to customise.
1.8 uses eval for templating, which is not ideal. 1.9 will support twig templating and should be a lot nicer.
