I usually do it when I'm on my period to contract muscles and make the Period shorter (Which actually works to any girl out there struggling like me), it can sometimes be messy but it's not that bad.
But other than that I only do it when I'm extremely horny.
And about it being normal doing it once a day, I guess it is? I know my boyfriend does it once or twice per day and honestly never questioned it.
