Buying stuff for credits just feels cheap, it's not hard to gain max ~$29 to gain the upgrades, mow the lawn, get allowance if you're young.
Just buying stuff for credits would also decrease the activity even more.

Sort of get it, but you gotta think that their are some kids that have to mow the lawn or have to do the dishes and still get no pay. Some adults might not even find upgrading on a forum worth their money if they aren't 100% convinced it's worth it.
The currency system brings a lot of activity as it is - and growing the currency system will be great for the community.
Sure it feels cheap, but with a forum economy in place we outta be able to buy more stuff.

I do kinda agree with your first statement, but $6 isn't much, even for kids. Not to mention this isn't a forum really dedicated to youngsters either.
Just because they aren't "able to buy" doesn't mean they won't be upgraded. I'd gladly upgrade a greasy 10yo if he's shown he deserves it.
I personally don't think a group for credits is right, awards yes.
That's like saying "I'm too poor to buy prime so I spammed to get (group name) and can see premium forum now."
Donations should be to support Aoki not because you want to leech premium...
