1.6.4 is the best version change my mind

1.12.2 is the best, because you don't have those crappy things that Microsoft added and there is a lot of mods you can install

1.7.10 for mod support since mods are fun

The best version is the latest tbh, but I like the pvp in the 1.8 <. The new features are just.. better.. especially for an rpg game like Minecraft.

I think sponge is not that important given that there were alternatives to sponge, I also think it is possible to manually make bukkit servers load forge mods by moving some files from forge's server jar file to buckkit but I don't know if that works. (I remember doing this for 1.7.10) Anyway I don't think that servers are that big of a deal to stop modders from updating given that modded servers are always incredably unstable.

1.16.4 is pretty unstable, it has close to no mod supports, the new features added to a game were already implamanted by mods in much much batter way!
Now if 1.17 manages by some miricle to bicome so popular that modders update to it and servers become stable and exclusively for that version I think 1.12.2 is the best version but 1.8.9 is the best combat version!

1.12.2 is probably the best in terms of mod support, reliability, and stability. There's a lot of servers running on it, both modded and unmodded. The new blocks (both decorative and technical) are also a great boon for all kinds of players, so it's really just superior overall to 1.6.4

No, the best version of Minecraft is 1.7.2. This have horses!.
