I've been playing games ever since I can remember, I have always dreamed of one day being able to make them for a living. But the more and more I get into game development, the more friends and people around me are telling me I'm wasting my time. Film, games and technology are really my passion but maybe they are right and I could be much better off in a different line of work.

Go for what you feel are right, else you will end up in an office doing a work you hate for the rest of your life. Creating games does have jobs, you just need to keep working to be as good as you have to be to be hired Smile

Do something fun as your job or you will be bored throughout your life. You don't want to get to the end and be filled with regret for the choices you could have made.

Well if you're passionate about it then who cares what the people say around you because when you're actually successful is when they'll start coming back and kissing your ass.

To be honest, it depends on whether you mean programming games, or just designing games. Because I know for a fact, because I wanted to go down the game design career path, and because I checked, that in my country, the video games industry is not very big. However for you, as long as your country has a bigger games industry, and you would be willing to program games, you would be surprised at what you can achieve.
(Note: It's good to go for games programming because then you have programming skills that you can put to use in pretty much any programming situation/job.)
Personally, I dropped the whole video games thing, and started chasing a business career path.

I also just realized that you may have indicated that you already had a job related to video games etc.
If that's the case, keep doing what you're doing. Getting started is the hard part, but once you're in the industry it's much better for you.
