Advice Needed Internet Security, VPN, and Smart Home Setup

Need general advice on setting up secure home internet and which VPN service should I get? Some things to consider:

- I have a gigabit connection, I don't want to pay stupid amounts of money to secure everything, so how best do I split traffic between VPN and unsecured.

- I currently use Netflix and Hulu, but eventually plan to dump those and setup Kodi with an automated torrent setup

- I just started to invest in Smart Home tech: Google Home speakers, chromecast, smart switches, and Arlo Pro

There is likelynot a perfect answer, but what are some reasonable compromises?
