I don't know much about these things.. I was in prison at the time of their release but I've heard ok reviews about them. Are they worth looking into? They seem like a competitor of Microsoft's Surface.

Google added support for Android Apps, so if you find a good chromebook with vfm price, it's not really a bad idea to buy one.

From what I've read, it's really only good for networking? It obviously couldn't game with the hardware the laptops seem to have, and I don't see any support for adding external storage capability? Is it all cloud based?

I would suggest you look into a Microsoft Surface instead, Chromebooks can be good but the MS Surface's can be more versatile.

Thanks for the suggestion, I am gonna research the MS Surface later. I really just need something portable for web editing and FTP work but has the strength to run heavy loads. You think the Surface can do that?

I would suggest you get a cheap laptop to be honest mate. More multi-purpose.

Chromebooks are garbage. Microsoft Surface's are garbage. Macbook Pros are garbage.
Anything that tries to cater to a certain niche of computer user is generally garbage.

That's not to say they don't all have their place, but you can get all the same functionality of any of the above listed products for less money in another product.

Chromebooks are fine if all you need to do is web browsing and whatever Google Drive can do (or other Google Cloud services.) Anything beyond that and you're better off getting a laptop.

Chromebooks are actually great for the price, as long as all you're using it as is a note-taking or facebook machine. Crouton can get you a linux distro as well if your book has enough power.
Surfaces are actually quite good as well, if Mac isn't your thing. The newer ones might have a relatively high price point, but they have decent power too. And you can't beat the form factor.
Macbooks are the go-to for anyone in the creative industry. Everything just werks™ and latency with the tech is absolutely minimal.

Don't know why you'd say they're all garbage. People care about more than just raw power.
Oh, and by the way, I saw a few cost analyses a while back, if you bought the parts individually for an iMac or Macbook Pro, the price would be nearly the same as just buying the device altogether, maybe 150$ off the mark. So cost-efficiency isn't really a good argument here.

Just get a moist gaming pc, and have the windows 10 os with it. No problems, just slick performance.

I generally refer to the big 3 as "garbage" because they're just that.
A respectable Chromebook will run you about $150. You can buy a Lenovo Ideapad 110 (Or whatever the model is, I can't recall) that has a quad-core Celeron, 2GB of memory, and 32GB of onboard storage that can do *everything* the Chromebook can, and more.

If you buy to-spec parts, you can build an iMac Pro for just as much money as buying one off the shelf, you are correct. But the smart way to build a comparable machine would be to cherry pick the parts. Would save you about a grand.

The Surface is sexy, sure. It's powerful too. But I can get the exact same specs in an equally beautiful machine from another reputable company for less any day of the week. Products like these are great, sure. But to me there is always a better valued alternative.
