File management for AMV editors?

Writing out this forum because ever since Ive started editing Ive had one hassle: File organization
my computer is a mess and I always misplace the source footage in my projects.
What are some good practices to put in place to know what is where? A lot of my projects share the same footage/assets so I cant really just put related footage in a singular project folder, because Id have to make more duplicates. (Which is what Im trying to avoid lol)

Anyone have some good advice? If further explanation is needed I dont mind writing it out.
