Fraternities / Sororities?

What're your guys' thoughts on fraternities and sororities? I'm not sure what they are like overseas but there's a stereotype for most in the U.S.

Most people it makes you lose a sense of individualism and people do it for the popularity, but I plan on attempting to join one when I begin college simply because I want to be apart of something big and contribute something to the community, plus it's always dope to make/meet new, potentially lifelong friends.

I kept out of those groups because of some of the stereotypes being in them creates. Plus, more often then not, some of the activities in our sororities/fraternities would lead to trouble... Although, if large gatherings and a plethoraof social interactions is what you want, then it may be for you. Plus there are many of these groups that engage in some very good causes. I suppose it comes down to whether the ones you're thinking of joining fit who you are.
