I realize that you need to be comfortable with your keyboard or mouse first.
Spending time playing the game would definitely help a lot.
I took a typing lesson and now, I can type fast and have no problem playing games that require some skills at typing ( Dota 2 - control micro)

To a degree, it will depend on the game. There are some games where practice will only improve you so much so if you don't have certain natural skills you will always hit that skill cap that prevents you from ever being better than just average

try not to waste time buy trying to get good at everything at once, work on your aim for a session for examplse, or perhaps your positioning or timing depending on the game. take time to learn enemy patterns and blindspots and take advantage of what you learn.

Watch a lot of guides. Play a lot to practice. Instead of just playing focus on a key area you want to develop.

Just watch Youtube video's of really good gamer's that play the game that your specifically interested in, also a-lot of practice and reading the instruction manual as well as the how to guide is very useful. Just jumping right into the game is not recommended.

If you're serious about getting good at anything, the first step must be to ensure that you: Eat healthy, get plenty of sleep, exercise daily.

Don't neglect that side of your life. Your mind and body will be sharper, and you'll find most things are more fun, gaming included. There's solid science behind this. Make those things a habit, and you'll still have plenty of time for everything else.

From that point, it becomes about training and guided practice. Guided practice is especially important (i.e., setting goals that are just beyond your current reach, and then repeating the actions until you can achieve that goal easily) -- this style of guided practice is how you get good at anything.

If you're working as a group, and the group aspect is important, you'll need to develop at the same rate for the competitive element to remain fun.

If you consider gaming a mostly social activity, it should be fun regardless -- just enjoy spending time with your friends.
