As the title says; I understand that they are very cheap but so are peoples expectations when it comes to staff. Im not in it for the power, but rather just to have fun and maybe make a bit of money... but A. Should I just save the $10 and fuck around on a different server and B. Is it even viable to think I would make money?

To run a succesful server, you need to be different. Addons, gamemode, etc.
If you want to make a profitable server, just put a lot of thing to VIP only (tools, weapons, etc)
The community will be more toxic tho.

I am the Owner of a Dark Rp Server on GMod open spaces and can say that if you could survive a certain period of time and gain a good fan base, the money you'll be able to have a lot even if you have little content and not cheapest prices. Personally, in the vast Russian community it works like this.

Hosting a Garry's Mod community is only worth your time if you know how to code or hired an experience developer to code your server. And have the correct & proper mindset for your server and lead it to he correct path.

If you have a good group of friends hosting a small TTT, Deathrun, Jailbreak server is and can be a lot of fun! However starting up a RP server takes a lot of time and effort to do so, and for me sucks all the fun out of hosting a server.

Hosting a garrys mod server can be worth it if you play your card correctly, attracting players with features that stand out from other servers.

Hosting a gmod server takes a lot of time and patience, to get everything right and functioning, sometimes you don't need cool scripts, or awesome functions, you just need to have the gameplay enjoyable, being respectful, and don't charge people tons amounts of money, for like 3 simple small things.

If you have the time, patience, and dedication to this type of project i say go for it.
