Legit the only reason I used Kik back when I was in middle school was because everyone else was using it.
I'm sure people still use it. But I think people would rather use iMessage or discord for group chats now

nope it's pretty dead I think

I find that the application is still active but has a lot of bot users and after the recent change of ownership, ad-ridden. If you plan on using KIK over wi-fi, I'd recommend blocking ads at a network level via DNS (e.g. pi-hole).
