Is using leaked assets illegal? Im talking about personal recreational use, not commercially. I know Unreal doesnt have a distribution policy, but Im not sure about Unity.

Both Unreal and Unity have a policy. It'd be foolish to create anything that you charge money for (or even use ones that you did not purchase).
If you purchased them legitimately, you can use it with your "team" on the project but that's about it. Otherwise, it's an obvious NO
