It also depends on what you're trying to protect from. It's not truly anonymous like TOR (which still can be traced SOMETIMES), but it'll mask your IP. Authorities can know you're using a VPN, but if it's a good VPN that doesn't log then it'll be hard for them to get your IP

Its almost impossible to be anonymous these days but VPN will definitely make you identify safe from many people. I personally recommend using vpn whenever you can.

Your VPN proivder could still keep a log of all the sites you are visiting so, if you trust your provider, then I guess it's safer. Make sure your VPN provider has been externally audited.
