Need help with LUA

I understand LUA is simmilar to C++ but i cant seem to understand it, currently I use sites like Sololearn and the such but i just cant get it; on a side note should i join my schools academy for computer arts it only gives a certificate for microsoft office (if it helps with answering i know html 4 and 5, SQL and really familliar with JavaScript).
