Michelle Obama wanted school lunches to be healthier. A noble aspiration, for sure. However, in an attempt to do that, school lunches became over-processed and also very small.
I live in southern Minnesota. The whole countryside is farm after farm after farm. I live on a farm. (Im not a farmer; my dad just needs land for his landscape company). Why then, are our school lunches not directly sourced from farms? We dont need to order stuff from halfway across the country in order to have a decent meal.
Im sure a local farmer would give the school a good deal on beef, milk, and corn. Do you know how many things can be made with beef and corn as the main ingredients?
You know what else is commonly grown in Minnesota? Apples. There are apples everywhere. I would gladly eat a burger, corn on the cob, apples, and milk for lunch everyday. The very idea of that meal is making my mouth water.
But no, instead of giving us healthy, hardy, American meals made from locally sourced ingredients, schools feel the need to order food from the state of Wisconsin, have it proccessed in New York, and then ship it to Minnesota.
Why? Whats the point? To make us healthier? Im a 59 150 lb, football player, who runs about 20 miles a week. I couldnt gain weight even if I tried. And I do try. I eat a metric shitton of protein on the daily.
And whats the point? So that they can put a bunch of plastic on everything to fill up the landfills? Because, seriously. There is no need to encase every food item in a layer of plastic. Im no environmentalist, but at least display some common sense here.
RE: What is wrong with cafeteria food in public schools these days?
schools are generally cheap and they don't have a lot of funding that they can put towards food. This makes it harder for them to serve better food, they focus on healty options.
