Freeware apps like that, there's always one that gets popular because it's free, light, and does the job well. Then when it gets really popular, they'll stuff it full of adware/malware (or in the case of utorrent, bitcoin mining malware) and cash out.
uTorrent passed that point several years ago, some people claim they've cleaned it up but I'd never trust anyone who would ever put a bitcoin miner in their torrent client.
