Have a concept or idea in mind, then break it down into individual parts, then research either via google or YouTube how to create those parts, way more digestible than just trying to learn the entire program in one go, that way you can apply each concept/technique as you learn.

look up ben Marriott or Max Novak on YouTube, very good tutorials ! love em

There are some great turoials here already, so I'll just let you know this. Learning after effects (and really, any editing program), is a long road if you want to achieve something that looks good. Make sure you don't get burned out while heading down this path, otherwise you'll end up wasting time.

dont work with presets all the time

go on youtube... practice a lot. just love it every day and practice and you will become a lot better.. in just a year from when i started i noticed huge improvements
