GMod will never die, it's been alive and lit for years! When we lose old players we gain new ones every year.

The player count is fairly steady, it's decreased a bit though due to the start of a new academic year I guess.
I don't think it'll die any time soon because people are always making new addons for it, and it's a great way to get into coding/scripting/programming.
