After Effects isn't for basic editing, that is Adobe Premiere Pro. AE is for VFX type stuff. Anyway, I use the adobe suite Smile

How does Sony Vegas Pro compare to After Effects when it comes to doing special effects and maybe some like mash ups or anything fancy?

Having used both programs to make videos before, After Effects / Premiere Pro is WAY better than Vegas ever will be. Worth the price in my mind, however vegas is a lot simpler to use so, it's up to you.

I have worked with Sony Vegas in hobby, and at work, and I have tried After Effects, but I prefer Sony Vegas

The only thing I don't like Sony Vegas 12 - is it's ability to fuck up videos with variable FPS (for example, from mobile phones). It just drops a video FPS on a timeline to minimal one. Adobe Premiere doesn't have that issue fortunately, but Sony Vegas is much easier to use.

To be fair, a large majority of effects in AE can also be done in SV - although it doestake a bit more work

However, AE is far superior for anything that is 3D or requires motion tracking

I used both of these about 4 years ago for gaming edits for YouTubers. I found Sony Vegas was a lot more basic but that being said very good for beginners/casual editors. AE for more advance editors.

vegas because I can make things pretty fast, and AE is kinda complicate, and i hate learn new software if the already i'm using is working good.
