Basically Ubuntu is a debian derivate distro that use the same package manager and packages format (.deb). Behind Ubuntu there is a private company (Canonical) that sells services and advanced tools, behind Debian a free software organization. Ubuntu has more recent version of the softwares and is more user friendly. Debian is security oriented and is more stable. You would consider Debian for servers and Ubuntu for workstations.
