Basically Ubuntu is a debian derivate distro that use the same package manager and packages format (.deb). Behind Ubuntu there is a private company (Canonical) that sells services and advanced tools, behind Debian a free software organization. Ubuntu has more recent version of the softwares and is more user friendly. Debian is security oriented and is more stable. You would consider Debian for servers and Ubuntu for workstations.

Exactly This except I use debian everywhere.
In the most non offensive way to put it. Out of the box ubuntu is typically dumbed down aka "More user friendly"

It think the Ubuntu is bloated, slow and it has high system requirements. You should try Linux Mint instead.
The Manjaro is also very good Linux distro.

People are all going to have lots of opinions on what to use. If you want to get a good introduction to life with Linux, use Ubuntu. Play around with that, get comfortable with the terminal, learn to do things like grep and manage packages, figure out how you like to use it.

The you can start looking at other distros and learn the ins and outs of each one.

I personally run ubuntu but both work just as great all though ubuntu is quite bloated with useless apps. So if you are planning on running an os on a potato machine I recommend going for a lighter linux distro

Debian is not the best for a smooth desktop experience. Use ubuntu or mint.
