If you don't want to run for hours outside and want to burn the same amount of calories while working on your muscles, jumping on the rope is the best way. It activates most of the muscles of your body and it burn calories and energy must faster than running. From what I remember I am pretty sure that 20 minutes of jumping rope is equal to one hour of running.
