the skulls are pngs i found on the internet (i think, im not sure). My technique to do highlights is basically just different adjustment layers (like exposure) then i make the adjusment layer a clipping mask onto the layer and then invert it so i can draw them in with the pen tool,i also use some overlays to make the light really pop and then for more realism i make the glow from the butterflies and eyes of the skull reflect onto nearby objects! (using adjusment layers again and drawing them in where i think they're needed)

that's so insightful, appreciate a look into your process. i've always had a hard time with artificial colored highlights but your method is definitely worth adding to the arsenal!
