Well, assuming you've only seen Season 1 of Sword Art Online, here's a quick run-down..

- Season 1: Sword Art Online (Canon)
- Season 2: Sword Art Online II (Canon)
- Movie 1: Sword Art Online: Extras (Canon)
- Spin-Off: Sword Art Online: Alternative Gun Gale Online (Non-Canon, just expands on the GGO world.)
- Movie 2: Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale (Canon)
- Season 3: Sword Art Online: Alicization (Canon; THIS IS AIRING CURRENTLY, EPISODE 4 AIRS TOMORROW!)

I'd really recommend watching all of that in that order, if you'd like; Although, you can also read the Light Novels if you want.

Regarding similar anime to Sword Art Online:
- Log Horizon.
- Accel World.
- No Game: No Life.
- Guilty Crown.
- DanMachi.

There's some others out there, however, the ones listed are the "better ones of the pile."

I always thought SAO was similar in concept to .hack//Sign but with a totally different style. I would certainly recommend the .hack//Sign franchise

Overlord (maybe?), or Isekai Maou to Shoukan Shoujo no Dorei Majutsu (How NOT to summon a demon lord)
In the first one the main character is more like an anti-hero character.
The second one is more comedic, because it's more like a harem anime.

Accel World, it's from the same creators, If I'm not mistaken. Log Horizon is cool too, but not everyone will enjoy the political topics it talks about. No Game No Life is basically a comedy with ecchi, don't expect too much, and you may be amazed. But if anything, Re:Zero is something I totally recommend. It looks colorful, but it's not so much. For full comedy though, Konosuba. That'd be all from me Heart
