It's a classic, but on a production scale it isn't really deserving of the credit it gets. Not to mention that they changed the ending, Light is so pathetic in the manga's ending but in the show it's just like eh.

For a good starting anime I'd say that One punch man is a great idea because it shows some normal japanese stuff (like Saitama going to the shop and what not) and then there's crazy action which might resonate with people as there's loads who watched shows like DBZ as a kid and didn't really consider that as an anime at the point.

I'd rather recommend Jojo, but that's too bizarre even for some people who do watch anime :^)

deathnote is for noobies like you but its good however can get boring

Try Naruto or One Piece. Those are good starter Animes.

People that are unsure if they'll get into something can be afraid of such a commitment for such long running shows, but I do agree that there are a lot of elements in these that can appeal to newer audience.

SAO is probably the best anime for starters, pretty good and you will not get bored

WorldEnd/sukasuka, what do you do at the end of the world? are you busy? will you save us?, You have to watch it to understand it is heartbreaking but at the same time absolutely marvelous.

Watch Naruto, Bleach or One Piece, if you never have liked anime try One Punch Man because no one can dislike that, then maybe MHA
