Optifine any day. It doesn't change the game much and boosts the fps. Its really good for low-end pcs trying to play more intensive maps.

The MCA mod is pretty fun, especially if you have nobody to play with.

Some good modpacks I've recently played are SkyFactory 4, Stoneblock 2, and Sevtech Ages. They're all progression-based modpacks and are pretty slow/tedious to grind out. Dungeons, Dragons, and Spaceships is really fun to play with friends in my opinion. Oh, and in terms of general mods, Tinker's Construct, Galacticraft, and Advanced Rocketry are all fun and intuitive.

There's a modpack called 'Roguelike Adventures and Dungeons' (RAD), which is pretty fun in my opinion, it isn't too new, but is still being updated (minecraft 1.12). However, if you want to see more, you can go to curseforge and to the minecraft modpacks section, there you can sort by popularity or downloads.
