In my opinion they are not because you just have them and by nothing with them. Of course there are a few things which allow you to use them but it very far away from being a daily use currency.

Of course they're a currency, although it still has to be popularized a bit I see it having some decent potential in the upcoming years - especially since bitcoin has been doing nothing but increase over the past few years

Bitcoin is a digital currency and it can perform every function a normal paper note can do.

What is a currency?
'the fact or quality of being generally accepted or in use.'

Simple answer it is accepted to be changed into cash as some people will buy it moreover some malls in japan accept btc as payment

With the growing acceptance and adaptation of virtual curriencies i would say in the near future many places will accept it

For example malls in sapporo Japan has already started to accept this curriencies for IRL goods
