I was working with Unity before moving to unreal engine, but if you're just starting, you gotta choose unity since they provide everything to make your experience way better.

I like a lot Godot 3, with his OpenGL ES 2 support from an old Linux Machine.

I've been trying out UnrealEngine recently since most indie games use that platform. Pretty simple for newbies to learn through guides.

the truth is, most unity games are just weird to play, and most UE games are requiring too high on PC specs to play.

I use unreal engine 4, quite functional, fully accessible to each person, the only thing is if you have a laptop, then it will be difficult for you

Unity is good for learning as there is a lot of resources and references. Unreal comes right behind.
For 2D games, GameMaker Studio is awesome and has visual feedback for programming. Hotline Miami was made with GM.
