Try to use as few plugins as possible since they can come with security issues undiscovered by the dev.

Few best wordpres plugins are:
1. WordFence
2. Sucuri Security
3. iThemes Security (formerly Better WP Security)

You can use any from above given list.

Thanks a lot for this tutorial. Since the first day, i started developing on WordPress, renaming my directories has and always will be the best option for me personally. That, and installing Wordfence (i like the notification system).

Does blocking access to directory scanners affect plugins that rely on scanning directories? such as file managers or backup plugins?

Best security for wordpress will be to have a good firewall and a containerization of your webserver like docker.

I don't think that you need a security plugin. In fact, the plugin can increase the attack surface itself.

Nothing is wrong with using a well known plugin for security tweaks ect. iTheme Security is one of those plugins that are worth it. We also offer this plugin free of charge with anyone who hosts a WordPress site with us. Along with activly patching WordPress vulnerabilities on the backed without any user input.

Keep your wordpress installation always up to date. Use as few plugins as possible, and only from WP store. Chose only stock themes. And turn on 2FA.

I do like Wordfence for all the security options it provides.
