I think ( as with most things ) it more or less depends on when and how you approach both series. Breaking Bad was a new idea with a unspecified finishing line. We were excited for the journey of Walter White and most importantly how it would end. With Saul we have less of that, we already know the climax of his life and there doesn't seem to be anything in the "present" of the show that promises anything that'll top that. At this point the viewer wouldn't really care if Saul got caught or died of some other cause. Because we don't care about him or his goals in the "present", we also generally aren't as invested in his backstory. It is only natural to think like that, after all why should we care about the start of a story that we know the highs and lows of? Well the reason they made Saul is that if you think about it, we know next to nothing about him when watching Breaking Bad. Hence if "Better Call Saul" is approached with the mindset that we don't know his climax, we only believe we do, then the show becomes a great deal more enjoyable, much like Breaking Bad itself. Both shows clearly has their ups and downs, Breaking Bad had it's final season, and Better Call Saul had it's first. I overall quite like Saul's show even though I have to admit that the start was awfully dull.

As for which I prefer? It would be rather rude to try and compare the two until Better Call Saul is complete as only then do we have a complete picture of it. Though as it stands now, and judging by the episodes we have then I prefer Breaking Bad. Saul's show is (ironically) a chaotic mess that doesn't seem to have any direction whatsoever, making it a chore to watch at times. Breaking Bad had a clear goal from start to finish, get money then die. Saul started with this premise to become a lawyer, then jumped around for a bit with small stories here and there, then building up to something only to drop that and go backwards for a bit, a chaos in other words.

I always love finding out the backstories to my favorite shows, so I love Better Call Saul because it gives you Saul's backstory and explains how he became Saul Goodman.
Putting that aside and judging the shows as a whole for their plot, casting, and so on, I prefer Breaking Bad over Better Call Saul by a small margin.

Totally agreed.

Oh man! Tough choice! I really like both, and I love getting to see the backstory behind Saul. I do feel like the two are very similar in the sense that both Saul and Walt are trying to survive and one small illegal action after another slowly turns them into the corrupt people they become. All that said, I think breaking bad had fewer episodes where I felt like the story didn't progress very much, so Breaking Bad wins out over Better Call Saul for me.
