through server-side programs for example, is it possible for a website to mine bitcoin while you're surfing it?

Not exactly through server-side programs but rather through general code, pirate bay's been the worst offender of it, sometimes spiking users' CPU usage up to 100% just by looking at the site.

there's a german picture board called "**0****m" (sorry but usually nobody is allowed to call it's name ;D) which used to have a mining tool in the background if you allowed it to do so. you could earn premium access just with mining something.
