There are other alternative solutions too.. such as using a reverse proxy, and modifying your site itself to prevent resources being used or exploits being used to exhaust your local server

It's like a proxy that take care of ddos protection and other techniques as if you wish to utilize content delivery networks, and some more things. It's a smart technology.

Never had a reason to use Cloudflare really and most sites ive visited are down mostly because of a cloudflare issue instead of what they are trying to protect against.

DDoS namely. That, and AlwaysOnline technology makes it so your covered even if CloudFlare conked on a particularly heavy attack. Good system; but certainly is case-specific and not required for low-traffic websites.

Bypassing improperly configured cloudflare is easy. You should configure it properly.

To ensure you don't have constant attacks getting through. Change your configuration around for CF and make sure to set the protection mode to "Agressive UAM" - Under Attack Mode.
This will ensure a captcha is requested when a user enters the site.
