Dance Music - is it overrated or over hyped?

Dance Music. Also known as EDM or Electronic Dance Music for short has been playing on our airwaves for quite a long, long time.
We might just failed to notice and considered it Pop music.

When I was still a kid. Way back in 2003. I remember the days when listening to the radio is still a thing. One track that stood out and stand the test of time for me weretracks namedOne More Time and Digital Love of Daft Punk. Yes oh yes. 2003. I thought it was just pop music since it is being played on the radio and way back then. I can't identify genres properly unlike now that I'm a DJ. Besides that, what really caught my attention to this French DJ/Producer duo is how they released their album Discovery. Since they collaborated with a well known animator in Japan which the duo consider as their childhood hero, namely Leiji Matsumoto. Both Daft Punk and Matsumoto produced a series of animated music videos called Interstellar 555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem.

Since I love anime and started to love their music, I remember downloading their songs when I had my first mp3 player. And played some of their songs in repeat. But back to the music videos, what is cool with the collaboration is that Leiji Matsumoto animated the music video and the songs of Daft Punk is being played as the background (no, you won't hear any kind of conversation from the animated characters. Just the music of Daft Punk if in case you haven't seen it). Besides the very unique and cool sound they produced, the animation was so superb that not only you will be taken away with the music but also watch the animations as another story unfold. All music videos are connected and tells a story that started on One More Time until Too Long.

Besides Daft Punk. I also heard Kaskade's first song It's You, It's Me. This was also released on the early 2000s which is why both artists, namely Daft Punk and Kaskade holds a special place in my heart and I consider them both my musical influences as a DJ or an artist. Daft Punk never played on a live event since Coachella 2006 while Kaskade is still playing on huge events and music festivals like Ultra Music Festival in Miami, Florida just to name a few. And I can really say music evolves. But still, the universal message of some tracks are all about love.

Just to let you know. If you by any chance can't tell which is which among the genres they play, Daft Punk's Album discovery is suprisingly Disco. Yes it is. Its just a new feel and the french duo's take on the genre while also experimenting on their sound before (which is why their latest tracks that they produced like Get Lucky sounds like their tracks from discovery). On the other hand, Kaskade plays multiple subgenres from house and is now even exploring and produced trap and tropical house music. It's You, It's Me is actually House music.

Never thought I would be able to write a thread this long. I guess I'm just passionate with this kind of music. So yeah. Back to my point. Is dance music overrated? I can say yes. Overhyped? In a way, yes. This is the current movement in Pop Music. And to prove my point, some of the songs produced by and/or fortheBlack Eyed Peas, Ed Sheeran, Madonna, Taylor Swift, Fifth Harmony and also Justin Bieber are actually Dance Music. It all started when David Guetta made the music popular during 2008 or 2009. And now, yes the music overshadowed some of genres famous before especially rock music in my opinion. It just sucks that some are taking shortcuts by using the same hooks and music core patterns on every track produced by some famous DJs/Producers. Creativity should always not be limited especially for these people who already made it big.

I don't think its over hyped at all. Has it gone mainstream? Yes, but I am a fan of a ton of different artists and listening to them all they all have a distinctive style to themselves and thats one of the coolest things I think about EDM specifically. For instance the way ZEDD layers a melody on the background of the vocals I find so interesting and unmatched in the way he does it. I have grown up listening to all types of music and love nit picking creative aspects out of each band or individual artist and find that even if the all try to copy hooks or certain chords they do it in their own way. Maybe I'm a little biased because I love this genre of music but I've found that most artists in the EDM scene have their own style and aren't necessarily trying to copy anyone.
