Do nulled scripts contain malware or is that just hype?

I'd like to see file comparisons with diff tools to see what PHP lines have been altered. Anything like that ever available?

For Wordpress, specifically, what do you use to scan for malware in your plugins?

Some of them contain backdoor. The nulled creator could obtain access to your site, files, etc. It's best to check the nulled script code manually for anything like that.

Short answer, they can I would only download or copy/paste things from sources you trust. If you have to question it, chances are its not safe.

It also depends on the source of the nulled scripts, if it's from a reputable site then there is a lesser chance of this, best bet is to manually check and test it in a non production environment.

Yeah, lot of nulled scripts have inserted backdors, you need to search for this before use.

I'm using datalife engine. I would definitely recommend a really good CMS.
