Politicians are supposed to represent their local constituency but what you seem to increasingly see is voting along party lines which may not benefit those they actually represent.

So why not just get rid of parties altogether and kill partisanship?

Can kind of agree with this. I just think political parties focus too much on each of their political ideologies instead of actually tackling issues with an open mind. But I guess they provide a good starting point and some structure.

The party system gives a team for people to be mad at, which boosts ratings for news stations and other media outlets which focus on whichever party is more popular at the time. Which then generates a lot of money, and also guarantees a margin of votes for whichever politician is trying to win a certain vote in something.

They aint gonna get rid of it, too hard to change the system and those in it don't want to because they make bank. Not sure they ever made sense though, and yeah I feel like there would be potential to have a better system in place at this point but not much ya can do about it.

Note too that third parties fail in the elections

It's not just a system you can change over night. Right now the sole purpose of those parties are just to make money, a ton of politicians are in the business.

I believe that political parties are a way of control. I don't think they matter any more, but with how rigged the system there is no way you can get anywhere in the political system unless you are part of one. They all have so much money they shut out anyone not in the two party system. The only reason someone like Ross Perot, years back, could get anywhere is because he had enough money to play.
