I want this to be a more honest discussion about gun rights based on the intentions of the 'Founding Fathers', their lack of foresight into the weaponry and issues of today. I think more attention should be paid to the "well-regulated militia" text. That is the underpinning for the right to bear arms, not just to defend yourself on a personal level.

Exact 2nd Amendment:

"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

Former Chief Justice Warren Burger called the modern interpretation of the second amendment one of the "greatest legal frauds" of the US.

Discuss. Remain civil. Only facts and interpretations of the text.

I take the 2nd amendment as being quite literal.
A well-regulated militia is necessary and as a citizen, you are a member of said militia. This can be referenced here:

With this, there leaves no room for interpretation. You are a part of the militia, and should the need arise, you should do what is necessary to maintain the security of your state.
By this, you are granted the ability to bear arms.

Being time period conscious, I would bet that the founding fathers would expect the militia to be as well armed as any army.

Little or not there were a lot of things the founding fathers were aloof to.
