I wouldn't say 80 million people playing gmod, more like 5-10 million. A lot of people that are new to steam or new to gaming probably have never heard of gmod, and it shows. Hopefully with in the next couple of years the game gets the recognition that it deserves and finally hits the 20 million mark.
