nah, it really isnt. german shepherds have an average life expectancy of 11-13 years, which is the average for a dog, and german shepherds are medium-large sized dogs, so that kinda makes sense, (the smaller the dog, the longer the life).

German Shepherds are EXTREMELY protective and loyal over their owners. They are actually very dangerous if they aren't used to people that don't show them love and takes care of them. That crazy bitch shouldn't be letting those kids pet her dog, especially a Shepherd. Ever since my dog was a small pup, we got him used to people being around. I'd touch is food while pouring it into his bowl and pet him so he gets used to me touching his stuff. I play with him everyday, we play rough on the ground, and he comes inside during the day when it gets hot and at night when going to bed. He's now 2 years old and has no problems at all with people or biting. Hell, he is more friendly than my small shitzu.
Shepherds that bite others are owners that don't allow much socialization with other people.
Don't get me wrong, bites with even trained Shepherds can happen, but it's up to the owner to shape their doggo.

They are usually prone to a certain set of illness that cause a great deal of discomfort for the dogs. As a result, they are often put down at a fairly young age to avoid further suffering. Very few actually die of natural causes at a young age. From what I have experience, the most common illness for active German Shepard's to suffer from is related to their back legs and muscle in that area. There are also other reason that contribute to their notoriously short lifespan, but that heavily depends on the country they are in. (Some think it is a good idea to put down a dog cus it barked at a little boy and his mother for example.)
