Houseki no kuni is my all time favourite anime. It's got mystery, philosophy, and intrigue. It's 3D animated though, which would put some people off.

I also loved Fairy Tail because it's drama and action packed. The downside to Fairy Tail is that it's aimed towards a younger audience and even with high stakes, all the main characters get plot armour.

I swear Yu Yu hakusho (although old) is one of the best series of all times. But if you're looking for something more modern you can't go wrong with Fate/Zero as a general starting spot. If you don't care for the fighting I really like Kaiji or Dr. Stone, if you want the fighting then Hajime no Ippo, and if you haven't seen Naruto you might as well... it's kinda a cringe suggestion, but it was big 3 for a while for a reason.

Attack on Titan is a good one, if you're fairly new to anime. Season 4 should be airing this month, so you've got a decent amount of content to start with.

After you've seen a good few action anime, definitely check out One Punch Man. Hilarious anime, but more so if you're familiar with the action/shounen tropes.
