It will cost you thousands if you plan on buying all the hardware for a proper hosting services. If you just want to start off, I highly suggest looking into reselling.

It will cost you thousands if you plan on buying all the hardware for a proper hosting services. If you just want to start off, I highly suggest looking into reselling.

You can get reseller packages for cheap. Take a look at WebHostingTalk's offer section. There are many reseller hosting packages available at low rates, many below $100.

OVH sells some nice Dedi's you can sell VPS's using that for example.
A real 1U server for example can easily cost you thousands and then you also have to pay for maintenance.

I'd go with reseller stuff though. If you want, we can set up a hosting together I have some stuff ready already:
(domain, reseller package)

1. If you are planning to start a temporary company and want to earn 10$ per month:
Buy a reseller plan (around$5/Month or less?) + a domain
Cost: $5 per month

2. If you are serious but low on $:
Buy a VPS.
Start selling hosting from it. (You can sell only a limited amount of hosting based on your VPS's specs)
Cost of a VPS differs based on specs, location, just google around.

3. If you are serious and have a lot of $
Buy a Dedi
Start selling VPSs & Shared/Reseller Hosting from it (I am not really sure how, :( )
Cost of Dedicated servers is usually high ($50+/Month)
