I would really like to see the math behind the "profitable" calculations. I wish we were back in time when we could farm with our local PCs

Not easy. The best way is buy a mining machine or hire someone to setup a machine for you. If he knows exactly how to setup according to your computer capacity and hardware installed.
Maybe it worths more if you have more than 2 or 3 PCs and set up to maximum capacity adn run them simultaneously.

Mining is dead nowadays, its all done by big infrustraction that will outperform you

I don't believe your specs are good enough to mine effectively, so you might not earn a lot.
