How are BTC wallets hacked?

They are bruteforced, this is why quantum computers will be hard for crypto

If you dont have 2 - factors verification enable on wallet, it could be hacked by bruteforcing.

Don't use Japanese cryptocurrency exchanges The two largest crypto heists ever were both against Japanese exchanges.. $400mil from MtGox in 2014 and $530mil from Coincheck a few months ago.

As liamdonovan said, definitely enable 2FA (really, if it's an option, you should enable it for anything important to you or money-related.)

You're generally safer keeping crypto in your own wallet as opposed to on an exchange... not a wallet on your cellphone/PC, but as cold storage (e.g. a paper wallet generated using a device not connected to the internet, so you can be sure that malware isn't transmitting your keys to third parties.)

I don't think it really makes a difference.. you can still be still be the victim of an armed robbery/home invasion or kidnapped/tortured into giving up your private keys, etc. exactly the same as with FIAT money in the bank.
