Trying to figure out how they made that digital matrix grid looking thing

This is a photograph of a projection.

I imagine the grid was created as a flat graphic in illustrator, had various glow effects applied, and then (the crucial step) it was projected on to a wall and photographed. This will give you the organic breaks and depth as seen in the image. Hard to recreate digitally.
